Thekkady and Kumily

Kumily is a town near Thekkady Periyar Tiger Reserve, in the Idukki District of Kerala. The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands. We can find elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs in these forest .


The Sanctuary is spread across 777 km2 (300 sq mi), of which 360 km2 (140 sq mi) is thick evergreen forest. The artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River. Sanctuary can be accessed through a trekking, boating or jeep safari. A boating accross the lake can provide an encounter with elephant herd drinking water from the lake.

The main attractions here include boating to the wild, elephant ride , trekking and babboo rafting. The nearby places include Mangala Devi Temple, Murukkady, Pandikuzhi,Pullumedu, Ramakalmedu, Vandanmedu , Spring Valley Mountain , Chellarkovil, Pandikuzhi, Vandanmedu, Panchalimedu , Grampi, Pattumala, Wagamon etc.
